About Skype
Skype is a piece of software that allows you to IM (Instant Message and voice chat with other users – like a telephone – one to one and in a group – a teleconference). It is also possible to video conference with multiple people.
To take part download the latest version of the Skype software from http://www.skype.com/ there’s a version for Windows, Mac, iPhone (and other types of smartphone). An alternative is to purchase a Skype phone (more info on the Skype website).
One of the major benefits is the relaxed manner of the chat, no focusing on what you’re typing and missing what others have written. Another plus is that depending on your setup, you and your spouse/partner or other family members can participate which opens up a whole new experience and understanding for them.
Note this will be audio only we are not attempting a video teleconference so you don’t have to make yourself more beautiful than normal!
Those who wish to join in will need a reasonable specification computer preferably with a dual core processor, and a broadband connection. Dialup is not likely to work effectively. You will also need a soundcard – speakers and microphone or a headset.
Whilst this method of connecting might exclude some people due to technical issues, it may allow others previously excluded. It may be of interest to those with visual issues and perhaps hand co-ordination and strength problems.
If you don’t have a Skype username and account it doesn’t take long to get one. There are comprehensive and simple instructions on the Skype website. Once that’s done you can fire up the program and find friends much like any other Messaging program. If you know their username you can look for that, or by email address. In this case look for me rowland.dicker as I will host the chat and if you’re all set up will invite you to join when you come online.
A Skype to Skype (computer to computer) call such as this is FREE. There is nothing to pay UNLESS you wish to take advantage of other features of the program such as calling landlines, mobiles and international numbers at very low rates.
